A practitioner's guide to securing AWS, Azure and GCP estates under RBI, SEBI, DPDP and CERT-In — the shared-responsibility line, the misconfigurations that actually breach, the CSPM/CNAPP tooling choice, and a 90-day rollout.
Most Indian enterprises did not decide to run a cloud security programme — they woke up with one. Workloads moved to AWS, Azure and GCP a service at a time, each team bringing its own accounts, IAM habits and blind spots. The result is an estate no single person fully maps, audited against frameworks (RBI, SEBI CSCRF, DPDP, CERT-In) that increasingly ask cloud-specific questions. This whitepaper is the practitioner's version: where responsibility actually splits, the misconfigurations that breach, the tooling that finds them, and a 90-day plan to close the gap.
1. The shared-responsibility line is where breaches live
Every cloud provider publishes a shared-responsibility model, and almost every team misreads it the same way. The provider secures the cloud — physical data centres, the hypervisor, the managed-service control plane. You secure what you put in the cloud — identities, data, network exposure, workload configuration. The breaches we investigate almost never come from the provider's side of the line. They come from a public storage bucket, an over-permissive IAM role, a long-lived access key in a repo, or a security group left open to the internet 'temporarily' eighteen months ago.
A managed database or Kubernetes service shifts patching and infrastructure to the provider, but identity, network exposure, encryption settings and data classification stay yours. Teams routinely assume 'managed' means 'secured by default' and leave a managed estate wide open at the access layer.
2. The misconfiguration classes that actually breach
Cloud breaches are boringly consistent. Across Indian BFSI, fintech and SaaS estates we assess, the same handful of classes recur — and they are all configuration, not zero-days. Fix these and you have closed the routes behind the overwhelming majority of real-world cloud compromise.
- Public object storage — S3 buckets / Azure Blob / GCS exposed to anonymous read, usually holding logs, backups or customer documents nobody remembered classifying.
- Over-permissive IAM — wildcard policies, unused admin roles, and human users with standing privileges that should be just-in-time. This is the single highest-leverage finding in any cloud audit.
- Long-lived credentials — access keys and service-account JSONs checked into code, baked into images, or never rotated. One leaked key is frequently the whole breach.
- Internet-exposed management surfaces — RDP/SSH, database ports, and admin consoles open to 0.0.0.0/0 via a forgotten security-group rule.
- Disabled or unmonitored logging — CloudTrail / Azure Activity / GCP Audit Logs off, sampled, or flowing to a SIEM nobody reads, so the compromise is invisible until a customer reports it.
- Unencrypted or unmanaged data stores — volumes, snapshots and databases without encryption-at-rest or with keys the cloud account itself can read.
In cloud, identity is the control plane. A blast-radius review of who-can-assume-what across your accounts finds more real risk than a month of vulnerability scanning. Start there.
3. CSPM, CWPP, CIEM, CNAPP — what the acronyms actually buy you
The tooling market is deliberately confusing. Stripped of marketing, there are four jobs, and a CNAPP is simply a platform that does several of them at once. Buy for the job you have, not the acronym.

For most Indian mid-market and BFSI estates, the pragmatic path is: start with CSPM to get posture visibility and a backlog, add CIEM as soon as IAM sprawl is visible, and consolidate into a CNAPP once you're running enough workloads that three tools become their own operational burden. The tool is not the programme — a dashboard full of unactioned findings is worse than no dashboard, because it manufactures a false sense of coverage.
4. The India regulatory cloud stack
Cloud no longer gets a regulatory pass in India. The frameworks that bind you now ask cloud-specific questions, and an auditor who knows cloud will ask them.
- RBI — the Cyber Security Framework and the IT-Governance / outsourcing directions expect documented cloud risk assessment, data-localisation for payment data, exit and concentration-risk planning, and the right to audit your cloud provider.
- SEBI CSCRF — capital-market entities must extend the framework's controls to cloud-hosted systems, including monitoring, access governance and resilience testing of cloud workloads.
- DPDP Act — data residency and transfer obligations make where your data physically lives a board-level question; cloud region choice and cross-border replication are now compliance decisions, not just architecture ones.
- CERT-In — the six-hour incident-reporting clock and log-retention directions apply to cloud workloads exactly as they do on-prem; your cloud logging must be able to feed an incident report on that timeline.
Under DPDP and RBI localisation expectations, the AWS/Azure/GCP region your data sits in — and where backups and DR replicas land — is a regulatory decision. Map data classes to regions before you map workloads to accounts.
5. A 90-day cloud security rollout
You cannot fix an estate you cannot see, and you cannot sustain fixes you cannot monitor. This is the sequence we run with clients — visibility first, identity next, then continuous assurance.
